First Things First ... X-Ray Technician School

X-ray technicians have the opportunity to work with some of the most exciting and groundbreaking medical machinery available while assisting and supporting patients.

Thinking about becoming an x-ray technician? The first step is to enroll in a school or program of your choosing.

The Education You Need

In the past, x-ray technicians were required to attend a six-month certification program. Recently, however, the requirement was changed, and technicians must now hold an associate degree from an accredited institution in order to be eligible for national certification. A bachelor’s degree is available as well, if you prefer. There are some states that also require the x-ray school to be accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.

What Will Classes Be Like?

Training to become an x-ray technician typically includes both classroom and practical training. Training programs cover lessons in anatomy, biology, and physics. You'll take an in-depth look at the complex interactions between radiation and living tissue. Some programs also cover phlebotomy and intravenous drug administration.

Do I Need A License?

Licensure of x-ray technicians is mandatory in most states. You must meet educational requirements and pass a certification exam. Like with any career, technology advances quickly, and there is always something new to learn. You must continuously upgrade and enhance your skills through continuing education.
