Clinical Medical Assistant

The Clinical Medical Assistant Certificate program is a 48.5-quarter credit program that full-time students can complete in as little as 12 months. We offer a daytime and evening course schedule. The program focuses on the clinical skills needed to assist physicians and nurses in physician offices and other healthcare settings. Students learn patient vital signs, standard examinations, phlebotomy/hematology techniques, laboratory procedures, 12-lead electrocardiography (ECG), basic pharmacology and the ethics of patient care. Students also learn typical office administration including reception, patient scheduling, filling and record-keeping, customer service, and an introduction to electronic health records management.

Graduates receive a Certificate as authorized by the New York State Board of Regents. Students completing this program are eligible to enroll in the Swedish Institute Clinical and Administrative Medical Assistant Degree program. Graduates typically work as medical assistants or medical office assistants in single or multi-physician practices, outpatient centers and hospitals. The certificate program is offered during evening hours.


Surgical Technologist

The Surgical Technologist program is a 94.5-quarter course and leads to an Associate in Occupational Studies degree. Swedish Institute’s Surgical Technologist classes are held during weekday daytime hours so that you can begin your career as a Surgical Technologist in as little as 21 months. The Surgical Technologist program prepares students to become an integral part of the surgical team. As a health professional whose primary responsibility is assisting and attending the surgeon, the Surgical Technologist usually works under pressure, with focused concentration, speed and accuracy for extended periods of time. The integrative approach at Swedish Institute will prepare students to work in this important field while caring for themselves and their patients.

Students learn anatomy and physiology, surgical procedures, and safe and effective conditions required for surgery. Through laboratory and hands-on practice, students learn proper procedures for creating and maintaining sterile conditions, setting up the operating room, and the preparation of equipment and instruments in advance of surgery.

Surgical Technologists work in a variety of settings such as hospital surgical departments, outpatient surgical centers, physician’s offices, ambulatory surgical centers and in the private sector in medical sales, product development and education.


Clinical and Administrative Medical Assistant

The Clinical & Administrative Medical Assistant Degree program is a 90-quarter credit program that full-time students can complete in as little as 18 months and leads to an Associate in Occupational Studies Degree. The program focuses on both the clinical and administrative skills needed to assist physicians and other members of the healthcare delivery team. Students learn patient vital signs, standard examinations, phlebotomy/hematology techniques, laboratory procedures, electrocardiography and basic pharmacology.

Students also learn medical office administration including patient scheduling, billing, medical office coding, insurance, and electronic health records management. Graduates typically work as medical assistants or medical office assistants in single or multi-physician practices, outpatient centers and hospitals. Day and evening schedules are available.

HealthCare Administration

The Healthcare Administration AAS degree program is a seven quarter, twenty-one months program that focuses on the administrative skills needed to assist hospitals, clinics and physicians with billing, coding, revenue and insurance management, and entry-level healthcare office administrative functions. This program is taught 100% online. Students learn basic medical and hospital office administration skills including reception, patient scheduling, and medical records management, including electronic medical records along with the specialized skills and knowledge needed for patient billing, insurance and revenue cycle management and diagnostic and procedural coding.

Students also learn to follow ethical and legal standards with respect to patient care including HIPAA privacy standards. They are eligible to sit for professional medical billing certification examinations, including Certified Professional Biller (CPB) from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) at the end of the fourth quarter and Certified Revenue Cycle Specialist (CRCS) from the American Association of Healthcare Administrative Management (AAHAM) at the end of the seventh quarter.

Medical Billing Administrative Specialist

The Medical Billing Administrative Specialist certificate program is a 50.5-quarter credit, four quarter program that focuses on the administrative skills needed to assist hospitals, clinics, and physicians with billing and entry-level healthcare office administrative functions. This program is taught 100% online. Students learn basic medical and hospital office administration skills including reception, patient scheduling, and medical records management, including electronic medical records along with the specialized skills and knowledge needed for employment as a patient billing specialist and introductory coursework in medical insurance, revenue cycle management, and diagnostic and procedural coding.

Students also learn to follow ethical and legal standards with respect to patient care including HIPAA privacy standards. They are eligible to sit for the Certified Professional Biller (CPB) examination from the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) at the end of the third quarter or thereafter. Graduates also have the option of directly enrolling in the Heath Care Administration Associates of Applied Science degree program. All credits can apply to the degree program.
